On May 14, we were delighted to welcome representatives from 15 countries, private sector companies and PEI partners to our first Africa Breakfast Club meeting in Angola for 2015. The event explored how for-profit businesses can play a key role in leading science, technology and innovation on the continent, especially considering their expertise and knowledge in these areas. We also examined how STI can be a catalyst for transformation and driving force for regional integration and African countries’ transition to dynamic, knowledge-based economies.
On behalf of our chairman, Dr Álvaro Sobrinho, PEI trustee, the Rt Hon Lord Paul Boateng, opened the event with a warm welcome to our guests, and a brief overview of the meeting. He also noted that emerging technologies have the potential to transform and enhance investment and trade on the continent. From there, Dr João de Deus, Executive Director of FESA, discussed how science and technology can accelerate the diversification of Angola’s economy and how the Foundation had run its ‘Technical-Scientific Journeys’ conferences for the past 19 years. Following Dr de Deus’ presentation, Dr Carlos Vicente, Director of Communications and Marketing at TAAG, one of our most valued partners in Angola, eloquently explained how the latest technologies can boost Angola’s economic development.
Our CEO, Mauricio Fernandes, also discussed how the PEI is partnering with the Universidade Agostinho Neto on the Centre of Excellence in Science for Sustainability in Africa (CESSAF), a new PhD facility in Luanda, Angola. In the next 10 years, CESSAF will award 100 PhD scholarships to African students in areas crucial to the long-term development of the continent, including natural resource use, sustainable agriculture and environment and society. Moreover, he talked about how the PEI is working with TAAG to implement a project that measures air quality at the 4 de Febreiro Airport.
Thank you to all of our distinguished guests and the PEI Partners Forum whose support helps make these events a reality!
